Our Streets:
There were trucks delivering Coal for furnaces to heat the homes. They were very busy during fall.
There was a ice truck delivering ice to homes for their ice-box almost every day.
A man pulled a cart down the street and sharpened peoples knives and sizers every week.
A team of horses pulled a garbage wagon in the alleys twice a week.
large trucks picked up any rags and iron in the allies to recycle
.During the war army jeeps and trucks were seen on our street. There were practice "Air Raids" at night. All lights had to be off.
Young boys rode bikes on the street, and sold ice cream. The bike had a cart built over the front wheel.
A milkman drove a truck and delivered milk to most homes.
Summertime, a truck selling fruit and vegetables came down the street.
Sometimes in summer, a man came down the street with a monkey. I don't remember what he sold,
but the monkey did a few tricks.
Doctors always made calls to your house.
During the day there were few cars parked on the side streets of Chicago. Possibly only a dozen.
We played most of our games on the streets during the day, and sometimes during the evening.
